Here's where the switch is, how to see and delete what it kept, what Personal Intelligence adds on top (and where Google says it isn't offered), and the boundary that catches people out.

Yes. Gemini has memory across chats — it can carry things over from your earlier conversations. Google calls the switch Memory, and in its help center it lives under a settings section named Personal context. It isn't automatic for everyone, though. Google's stated requirements are that you're 18 or over, signed in with a personal Google Account, and have Keep Activity on. If any one of those isn't true, Gemini starts every chat cold and you get the "why does Gemini forget previous conversations" experience.

One thing to clear up before the steps, because Google uses two names and people assume they're two features. Personal context is the help-center label for the section that holds the Memory toggle. Personal Intelligence is the name Google's product and announcements use for the whole personalization layer — memory of your chats, your instructions to Gemini, and the Google apps you connect. Google's own connected-apps page spells out the relationship: when you turn Personal Intelligence off for a chat, that chat "won't be personalized based on the memory of your Gemini chats, instructions for Gemini, or info from Connected Apps." So if your settings screen shows one name and not the other, you're looking at the same family of controls; the Memory toggle is the piece that governs memory across chats.

What Gemini actually remembers

With Memory on, Gemini learns from your past chats to, in Google's phrasing, understand more about you and your world. In practice that shows up as continuity: it picks up a project you discussed last week, suggests a next step, or brings up something you compared a month ago without you re-explaining it.

Two boundaries are worth knowing up front, because both surprise people:

It doesn't apply everywhere in Gemini. Google's memory help page lists memory of past chats as working in the mobile app, the web app at gemini.google.com, Gemini in Chrome where available, and on a smartwatch — but not in Gems or Live chats. You can still ask about a past Live conversation from a normal text chat. (Google's 2026-08-26 Gemini Live announcement says Live itself now remembers past chats through Personal Intelligence; the help page hadn't been updated to match when we read it on 2026-09-08 — see the August section below.)
It's tied to your saved activity. Memory draws on chats that Google is keeping for you. Turn Keep Activity off and the feature isn't available at all; delete a conversation and Gemini stops drawing on it, though Google notes there can be a short delay before it stops using something you removed.

How to turn on Gemini's memory across chats

The control lives under Personal context, and the path differs slightly by surface (re-verified against Google's help page on 2026-09-08):

Gemini mobile app: tap Menu at the left, then your profile picture or initial → Personal context, then turn Memory off or on.
Web (gemini.google.com): click Settings & help at the bottom → Personal context, then turn Memory off or on. On a phone or tablet browser, tap Menu at the top first.

If the toggle isn't there, the reason is usually eligibility rather than a bug. Google's three stated requirements are that you be 18 or over, sign in with a personal Google Account — the feature isn't available on a work, school, or supervised Google Account — and have Keep Activity on, of which Google says: "This feature isn't available when this setting is off." Google's help center doesn't say whether the Memory toggle itself starts on or off, so check yours rather than assuming it matches a screenshot you saw somewhere.

Why Gemini forgets previous conversations

When Gemini "keeps forgetting," the cause is almost always one of these:

Memory is off. Check Personal context first. It's one toggle, and it's the quickest thing to rule out.
Keep Activity is off. This one is quietly decisive: with it off, memory of past chats isn't available at all, and Google retains your conversations for just 72 hours — to respond to you and to protect Google, its users, and the public. Nothing accumulates to remember.
You're on the wrong account type. Work, school, and supervised accounts are excluded, as are users under 18. Plenty of people sign into Gemini with a work identity by default and never notice.
You're in a Gem or a Live chat. Different surface, different rules — see above.
The chat is gone. Gemini Apps Activity auto-deletes at 18 months by default. If you shortened that window to 3 months, or deleted the conversation, the source is no longer there to draw on.
You switched surfaces or accounts. Memory follows the Google Account it was built in. A different account, or a work profile, starts from nothing.

Notice that none of these are really "forgetting." Gemini's recall is a setting plus a retention window — and once both are configured the way you want, the behaviour is fairly predictable.

How to see and delete what Gemini remembers

Four routes, and they answer slightly different questions:

Your chat list. On a computer at gemini.google.com, Google's instruction is: "On the side panel, find your pinned and recent chats." The same page documents searching for a chat, pinning and unpinning one, renaming one, and deleting one — and states that when you delete a chat from your pinned and recent chats, "it's also deleted from Gemini Apps Activity", along with any content created in that chat. (The article carries Android and iPhone & iPad tabs too; the steps quoted here are the computer ones, re-read 2026-09-08.)
Gemini Apps Activity. At myactivity.google.com you can review and delete your activity and change your auto-delete window. To remove something Gemini remembered about you, Google's instruction is to delete every chat containing that information — and if it also came from a connected app, to disconnect that app as well, because doing only one of the two leaves the other copy in play. Correcting is a separate route: with Memory on, correct Gemini directly in the chat. Turning Keep Activity off stops Google using your future chats to improve its AI models — the Privacy Hub's wording is that if it's off "and you don't submit feedback, Google also does not use your future chats to improve its AI models" — but not everything: Google says it "still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers."
Switch it off for one chat. Not in our 2026-08-25 write-up; on Google's help page when we read it on 2026-09-08: in the text box, click Tools and turn Personal Intelligence off. That chat then isn't personalized from your chat memory, your instructions, or your connected apps, and Gemini remembers the choice for that chat. Google also points to a temporary chat if you don't want the conversation saved to your account at all.
Just ask. Google's own suggestion for checking whether an answer leaned on earlier chats is to type: "Did you use any info from past chats?"

That last one is telling. Asking the assistant what it used is a reasonable check, but it isn't the same as a list you can open, read down, and prune line by line — and it can't point you at the original document a fact came from, because for chat memory there isn't one outside the chat.

How long Gemini keeps your conversations

Remembering and keeping are separate questions. Here's the retention picture, from Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (Google's page dated 2026-09-24, re-read 2026-09-25):

If you want Gemini to remember more, lengthen the window or turn auto-delete off. If you want it to remember less, shorten it — but understand you're trading away the continuity at the same time, everywhere, not just in the conversations you'd rather it forgot.

Where Gemini's memory stops

Here's the part the yes-or-no answer skips, and it's the part that matters if you're using Gemini for real client work.

Everything above is memory of your Gemini chats. Gemini can reach further — through Connected Apps, which Google documents under Personal Intelligence, at Settings & help → Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps — but the reach is bounded by Google's own product line. Google's list of apps that work with Personal Intelligence has five entries, each a single toggle: Contacts, Google Photos (only in certain countries and territories), Google Workspace — which Google describes as "your content in services like Gmail, Calendar, and Drive" — Search services, described as "your saved data in services like Search, Maps, and Shopping", and YouTube, which Google says includes your YouTube History. Note what that grouping means in practice: Gmail isn't separately connectable. It rides the one Workspace switch, alongside Calendar and Drive.

Two consequences follow, and neither is a criticism of the engineering — it's just what an ecosystem assistant is:

Connecting is all-or-nothing per toggle — and the toggles are coarse. There's no "remember these four client threads," and no way to bring in Gmail without also bringing in Calendar and Drive. You hand over the mailbox, or you hand over nothing and paste things in by hand.
Anything outside Google is outside its memory. The contract PDF a client sent to your work address. The reading highlights in Readwise. The Notion doc you exported. The thread you read in Superhuman. The voice memo you left yourself between meetings. The photo of a whiteboard. None of it is in Gemini unless you personally put it there, chat by chat.

Connecting apps also stacks more settings on top. The base three match memory: be 18 or over, sign in with a personal Google Account (not work, school, or supervised), and have Keep Activity on — again, "This feature isn't available when this setting is off." Google's requirements list names no subscription. Then Google lists additional requirements for personalization drawn from your other Google apps, each gating a different slice:

Web & App Activity on — without it, personalization based on your Search services data isn't available.
YouTube History on — without it, personalization based on your YouTube activity isn't available.
Smart features in other Google products on — Google states plainly that Gemini Apps can't connect to Google Workspace when this setting is off. This is the one people miss, and it's the switch standing between Gemini and your Gmail, Calendar, and Drive. It's a Gmail setting, not a Gemini one.
Google Photos has its own criteria: available only in certain countries and territories, and before it can personalize anything you must turn on Face Groups in Google Photos and select which face is yours, plus turn on Estimate missing locations.

Read that list again with Gmail in mind. Getting Gemini to your mail means Keep Activity on, Smart features in other Google products on over in Gmail's own settings, and the Google Workspace toggle connected — three switches in two different products, and the middle one isn't in Gemini at all. That's the honest shape of an ecosystem assistant, not a knock on it.

Personal Intelligence in 2026: what expanded, and where Google says it isn't offered

The connected-app layer has moved a lot this year, and the geography matters if you work from Europe. Dated, from Google's own posts and help pages:

2026-05-20 — Google I/O. Google announced it was "expanding Personal Intelligence in AI Mode to more people in nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages — no subscription required." That sentence is about AI Mode in Search, not the Gemini app; the same post says that in AI Mode "you can securely connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos, and soon Google Calendar." The post names no excluded countries.
2026-05-20 — Daily Brief. Announced the same day for the Gemini app: "our new out-of-the-box agent that organizes and prioritizes your day ahead," which "analyzes your inbox, calendar, and tasks," rolling out "to all Google AI subscribers (18+) in the Gemini app, starting in the U.S." — and only if those subscribers "have chosen to connect their Google apps." A subscriber feature, U.S. first, built on the connected-apps layer.
The Gemini app's geography, as of 2026-09-08. Google's help page for connecting your Google apps to Gemini still carries this line: "Not available in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom." It adds that Personal Intelligence "is being released gradually and may not be available to you just yet." Memory of past chats is documented on a separate page that lists no geographic exclusion — so in Dublin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm or Nicosia, as in London or Zurich, the position on Google's own pages is: chat memory yes, Gmail/Calendar/Drive reach into Gemini no. If Google lifts that, the help page is where it will show first; treat what you read here as a snapshot.

Put plainly for a consulting partner in Ireland or the Netherlands: the feature that would let Gemini prep you from your Gmail and Calendar is the one Google lists as not available where you live. The chat memory works; the ecosystem reach doesn't.

Gemini Live and Daily Brief (August 2026)

On 2026-08-26 Google announced a productivity upgrade to Gemini Live, the voice mode, and restated it in its August recap on 2026-09-01 The relevant part for memory: "Gemini Live now remembers the things you've chatted about and that matter to you, so you never have to start from scratch. With Personal Intelligence, Gemini connects the dots across your past conversations and your Google apps like Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube." Google's examples are "Can you pull up the recipe we talked about yesterday?" and the name of a restaurant from a past trip. The same post brought Daily Brief into Live — say "What's my daily brief?" and Gemini "will combine your most important updates from Gmail, and Calendar into one concise digest" — plus hands-free Gmail triage (search, summarize, star, archive, delete by voice) and Spark for multi-step tasks. Two footnotes on the post set the tiers: Spark needs a Google AI Pro subscription or higher; Daily Brief needs Google AI Plus or higher. And the prerequisite is the same layer as everything above: "make sure you have chosen to connect your apps in your Gemini Personal Intelligence settings."

Two honest caveats. First, Google's memory-of-past-chats help page still said, when we read it on 2026-09-08, that memory is "Not available in certain features, like Gems or Live chats" — the announcement and the help page hadn't been reconciled, so what you see in your own app is the answer. Second, none of this changes the source of the memory: Live is a new way to talk to the same record — your Gemini chats plus the Google apps you connected — not a wider one.

Importing memory from ChatGPT (or Claude) into Gemini

If you're switching, Gemini will take what your previous assistant remembered. Google announced the route on 2026-03-26; it lives under Settings & help → Import memory to Gemini and has two methods — paste in the memory summary your old assistant produces, or upload a .zip of exported chats (5 GB per file, up to five files a day). Google's import page adds that "the text of your chats will be transferred over to Gemini. Images and files generated in your previous app will not be included." Three constraints from Google's help page (read 2026-09-08): the feature "is currently not available in: The EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom"; you need a personal account and to be 18 or over; and "your imported and continued chats are saved in your Activity. This data is used to improve our services (including training generative AI models), and to protect Google, our users and the public" — deletable afterwards like any other chat. Worth being clear-eyed about what actually moves: the memory text the other assistant had derived from your chats. Anything that never entered a chat — the client's emails, the PDFs, the call you took notes on — wasn't in there to move. What "remembering" has to mean for client work

If you're running seven engagements at once, the useful question isn't whether an assistant recalls last Tuesday's chat. It's whether it can answer "what did the CFO say about pricing in the October review?" — where the answer lives in an email thread, a transcript, and a PDF, not in a chat window.
