How to find archived chats in ChatGPT, and put them back in your sidebar

Archiving a chat hides it. The work inside it is still the work you'll need next week. Here's where OpenAI says archived chats live, how to get one back, and what deleting does differently.

Archive is in the same ••• menu as Delete, and unlike Delete it doesn't ask you to confirm. So people archive a thread by accident, or tidy up the sidebar at the end of a project and forget they did. A week later the client asks a follow-up, and the thread with the numbers is gone from the sidebar.

It isn't gone. Below are the two ways to reach an archived chat, how to unarchive it, and how archiving differs from deleting. Everything comes from OpenAI's help center as it read on 23 September 2026. The two main articles were updated on 20 September, so older guides may show menus that have since moved. Sources are listed at the end.

Where archived chats live in ChatGPT

OpenAI's article on deleting and archiving chats says archiving "removes the chat from the regular sidebar but does not delete it." Archived chats sit in a separate list under Settings, and they stay in your account "until you delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them." Archiving also "does not change its retention period."

To open the list:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Data controls.
3. Select Archived chats or View archived chats. OpenAI says the label depends on your device. If Manage appears, select it.
4. Find the chat and select Unarchive to put it back in your regular history.

OpenAI's article gives the same route for every device. The only difference it mentions is that one label, and it doesn't say which device shows which. It gives no separate steps for the Mac or Windows desktop apps. If a label on your screen doesn't match, look for the nearest equivalent under Data controls.

The faster route: search for a word you remember

You don't have to go through Settings. OpenAI's article on finding chats is explicit: "Regular and archived chats can appear in search results, but deleted chats do not." And again: "Archived chats remain searchable even though they do not appear in your regular chat history."

1. Open Search from the ChatGPT sidebar. On the web, Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on macOS opens it too.
2. Type words or phrases from the conversation. Search "can match words in a chat's title or messages," so the client's name, a project code or a figure you discussed works better than a vague description.
3. Select the Chats filter if it's offered, or All if nothing turns up.
4. Select the result to open the chat.

OpenAI's articles don't say whether opening an archived chat from Search unarchives it. They describe Unarchive only in the Settings list. If you want the thread back in your sidebar for the rest of the project, use the Settings route.

If it isn't in the archive either

Start with OpenAI's first check: "Confirm that you are signed in to the correct OpenAI account and workspace, including the correct email address or single sign-on (SSO) method." If you use ChatGPT for both work and personal chats, or belong to more than one workspace, check each one. Then check OpenAI Status for an active incident, and request a data export if you need the text whatever happens. If the chat was deleted rather than archived, OpenAI says "Deleted chats, including chats removed with Delete all chats, cannot be restored." Archive vs delete: what each one does

The training row matters if a thread holds client material. Archiving is not a privacy step. OpenAI says your Improve the model for everyone setting "continues to apply" to archived chats as it does to any other chat. If a thread shouldn't be used for training, that's what the setting is for, not the archive. OpenAI says turning it off applies to new conversations. On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, OpenAI says it doesn't use content to train its models by default.

Archiving or deleting everything at once

Both have a bulk version in the same place: Settings → Data controls → Archive all chats or Delete all chats, followed by a confirmation message. Two cautions from OpenAI. These actions "can affect chats in your current account or workspace, including chats in projects," so a clean-out also reaches project chats. And "The Delete all chats action cannot be undone."

If you're about to clear your history at the end of an engagement, Archive all chats is the reversible option. Everything leaves the sidebar, stays searchable and can be unarchived one by one. Delete all chats is permanent. Before using it, pull out anything a colleague or client might ask about later.

Deleting ChatGPT chat history: the short version

To delete one chat: open your chat history, select the more options menu (•••) on the chat, select Delete, and confirm. You can also delete from the archived list: select Delete there instead of Unarchive. OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, "unless it was already de-identified and disassociated from your account or OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal obligations." On a company plan, OpenAI adds that "authorized compliance tools may still access eligible workspace data under your organization's retention policy."

Two things deleting a chat doesn't do. It doesn't delete "files saved separately in Library." And it doesn't delete the original data in a connected app. Disconnecting an app "prevents future access but does not delete past conversations that already used app data."

Where these articles don't cover something, such as separate desktop-app steps, which device shows which label, or app version numbers, this guide says so rather than guessing. OpenAI renames and moves these settings often, so treat the paths as a guide and your own Settings screen as the authority.

Why you were digging through the archive

People rarely dig through an archive out of curiosity. The client has asked what was agreed on the renewal. A partner wants the figure from the scoping call. You're walking into a meeting and need the one paragraph that settled a question three weeks ago. The chat was where you worked that out, but the thing you actually need is one answer from one client thread.

ChatGPT isn't the problem here. A chat history is a record of thinking out loud, and hundreds of threads, archived or not, are a hard place to find one decision. The habit that helps: when a thread produces something you'll be asked about later, keep that result next to its source. The client's email stays in your mailbox and the signed PDF stays in your files. The decision lives somewhere you can ask about it by name.

Where Equerry fits

One honest limit: Equerry can't import your ChatGPT conversations or archive, so it won't find a thread for you. Use the steps above for that. It helps with the next engagement, so the answer you need is in something you sent on purpose, not in a thread you archived and lost track of.
