ChatGPT says "Conversation not found" or "Unable to load conversation" — what to try

A thread you can't open is work you can't reach — and it is always the thread you needed. Here is what OpenAI actually documents, what is only reported by users, and the order to try things in.

You click the thread you have been working in for three weeks — the client's numbers, the draft you were going to send today — and get a single line instead. Either "Conversation not found" or "Unable to load conversation", sometimes followed by a long string of letters and digits. Nothing else on the screen tells you whether the work still exists.

This page separates what OpenAI documents from what is only reported by users, says which is which every time, then gives a short checklist. Everything was read on 20 September 2026; sources are at the end.

In a hurry? Go straight to what to try, in order. One rule until you have read it: don't delete anything.

"Conversation not found" and "Unable to load conversation": where users report seeing each

Start with an honest gap. OpenAI's help-center article "Troubleshooting ChatGPT Error Messages" lists a number of messages — "Something went wrong," "A network error occurred," "There was a problem preparing your chat" — with steps for each. As read in full on 20 September 2026, it lists neither "Conversation not found" nor "Unable to load conversation." OpenAI's release notes don't contain either phrase. So in the OpenAI pages we read, no sentence says "this message means that."

What follows in this paragraph is therefore drawn from user reports on OpenAI's community forum, not from OpenAI. "Unable to load conversation", usually followed by the conversation's ID, is described by people who clicked an existing chat in the sidebar and got the message instead of the thread (reports from December 2023 through April 2026). "Conversation not found" is more often described by people who were already inside a chat and tried to send the next message (reports from April 2023, and in temporary chats from September 2024 through June 2026). One user in August 2025 described seeing both in sequence: "Conversation not found" while a reply was being written, then "Unable to load conversation" with an ID after reloading. Treat the two as close relatives: both tell you ChatGPT did not show the thread it was asked for, and neither tells you why.

Tier one: what OpenAI documents

These are the situations OpenAI itself describes, each quoted from its help center, status page or release notes.

• An incident on OpenAI's side. Rule this out first: nothing you do on your own device will fix it. OpenAI's write-up of 19 July 2026 says that between approximately 7:08 and 8:05 AM PDT "some ChatGPT users were unable to load or continue conversations." On 12 July 2026 its status page said of users on iOS (iPhone and iPad): "Some users may be unable to load or use conversations." Neither note quotes "Conversation not found" or "Unable to load conversation" — the closest either comes is the 12 July note's mention of "403 errors" — and both incidents were marked resolved the same day. Check status.openai.com before you do anything else.
• One app failing while the others work. On 27 June 2026, OpenAI's status page reported that users of the Windows desktop app "may see chat history or conversations fail to load," and added: "ChatGPT on web and mobile remains available as a workaround." A thread that will not open in one place may open in another.
• The chat was deleted. OpenAI: "You cannot restore a deleted chat in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support." This includes chats removed with Delete all chats, which OpenAI notes "can affect chats in your current account or workspace, including chats in projects." OpenAI also documents one way to land on a deleted chat by accident: "If an outdated search result remains briefly, opening it does not restore the deleted chat." • The chat was archived. Archive sits next to Delete in the same menu and asks for no confirmation. OpenAI: "Archiving removes the chat from the regular sidebar but does not delete it. Archived chats remain searchable." This one is fully recoverable: here is how to find and unarchive it.
• You are in a different account or workspace. The first item on OpenAI's own list for missing chats: "Confirm that you are signed in to the correct OpenAI account and workspace, including the correct email address or single sign-on (SSO) method." A personal login and a firm login — or Apple or Google one day and an email address the next — can be two separate accounts, and the thread lives in only one. And if your firm is about to move your personal ChatGPT into a company workspace, OpenAI's export article says to "request, download, and check your data export before the personal workspace is removed. After a personal workspace is removed, you may no longer be able to open an earlier export link or request another export from that workspace."
• It was a shared link, and the link no longer works for you. A link created inside a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace "can be opened only by eligible members of the same workspace." And links do not outlive the chat: "Deleting a conversation removes its shared conversation link," and shared links "are deleted when their creator deletes the account." OpenAI also notes a brand-new link "can take a short time to become available."
• It was a temporary chat that was never saved. OpenAI began rolling out an option to save a temporary chat to your history on 27 August 2026. If yours wasn't saved: "If you do not save a temporary chat, it will not appear in your history and cannot be reopened from history after you leave it." OpenAI says it "may keep a copy of a temporary chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes"; the article describes no way for you to get that copy back. • A workspace rule removed it. On a company plan, OpenAI says regular and archived chats "remain saved to your account until you delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them." If your firm manages your ChatGPT, the administrator sets that rule, not you.

On very long threads, OpenAI has documented a change rather than a cause. Its release notes for 21 August 2026 include "Faster long conversations on the web": "Long conversations now load more efficiently in ChatGPT on the web," because ChatGPT now "loads messages in smaller sections instead of retrieving the entire conversation at once." In OpenAI's help center, status page and release notes, that is the only statement we found about long conversations loading or failing to open. (For a ChatGPT that is slow or stuck, the error-messages article separately advises: "Start a new chat if the conversation is long or has many turns".)

Tier two: reported on OpenAI's forum, not in OpenAI's documentation

Everything in this section comes from OpenAI's community forum. Most of it is people describing what happened to them. Where OpenAI's own support account replied in a thread, we quote the reply and say so — a forum reply is not a help-center article, and none of these replies names a cause. A fix that worked for one person is not a fix OpenAI recommends.

• Long and maxed-out threads failing to open. A forum thread opened on 16 April 2026 gathered reports that long conversations, especially ones that had reached the length limit, failed with "Unable to load conversation" on web and in the apps, while shorter chats opened normally. One user wrote on 24 April 2026 that the same threads still opened in the mobile app; another wrote on 16 June 2026 that theirs failed on web and mobile alike. OpenAI's support account replied in that thread on 16 September 2026: "The issue affecting access to older or longer conversations has since been fixed." A user replied on 17 September 2026 that it was still happening on their account. • "Conversation not found" in the middle of a temporary chat. A thread opened on 7 September 2024 describes temporary chats returning the message on the second question. Users added the same report in 2025 and as recently as 5 June 2026, and a separate report on 9 August 2026 describes it in the Android app. OpenAI's support account replied on 16 September 2026: "We'll pass this along for review." No cause has been given.
• After a move into a company workspace. On 29 August 2026 a user reported that after their personal Plus account was migrated into a ChatGPT Business workspace in May 2026, one conversation "currently returns 'Conversation not found'" and another vanished from history. This is a single report, with a support case still open when it was posted.
• Signing out and in, and the export that "woke it up." In a forum thread opened on 17 December 2023 and viewed more than 190,000 times, one user reported on 25 December 2023 that after requesting a data export the stuck chats appeared in the export and started opening again. Several others said it helped, one said the problem came back, and at least one said it did not help. Another user (8 March 2024) said signing out, clearing cookies and signing back in worked. We can't tell you why either would work; both are harmless, and both appear — for other reasons — on OpenAI's own list below.

What to try, in order

The order is ours: cheapest and least risky first. The steps are OpenAI's — six of the seven come from its "Troubleshooting missing chats" list, and step 2 from the June 2026 incident note quoted above. OpenAI wrote that list for a chat that has gone missing, not for either error message; applying it here is our call, because it is the closest thing to official steps we found. Throughout: do not delete anything, including a chat that looks broken or duplicated — one forum user reported deleting what looked like a duplicate and losing the original (21 April 2026). Deleting is the one action OpenAI documents as permanent.

1. Check status.openai.com. If there is an active incident touching conversations, stop here and wait. For scale: the 19 July 2026 disruption lasted about an hour; on 12 July OpenAI reported conversation access restored a little under three hours after its first note.
2. Open the same chat somewhere else. If it failed in the iPhone or desktop app, try chatgpt.com in a browser, and the reverse. If it opens anywhere, copy out what you need while it is open.
3. Confirm the account and workspace. Check the email address and sign-in method under your profile, and the workspace switcher if your firm has one.
4. Refresh, then sign out and sign in again. OpenAI's wording: "Refresh ChatGPT, or sign out and sign in again."
5. Look in archived chats. Settings → Data controls → Archived chats (labelled "View archived chats" on some devices). Unarchive returns it to the sidebar.
6. Search for a phrase you remember. Use Search in the sidebar with a distinctive word from the thread — a client name, a figure. OpenAI: "An older chat that is no longer visible in the sidebar has not necessarily been deleted." Search covers archived chats; it does not cover deleted ones.
7. Request a data export if you need the text whatever happens to the thread. Details in the next section.

If the chat still will not open on any device, write to OpenAI Support. OpenAI asks you to include "your account email and sign-in method, workspace name when applicable, the approximate date of the missing conversations, and the checks you completed." Its error-messages article, in its steps for a ChatGPT that hangs, adds: "note the model used and the conversation URL or ID, then contact Support." So copy down the chat's web address and any ID shown with the error before you close the tab.

How to get the text out when the thread will not load

The export is a separate route to your chat history, and it is on OpenAI's own missing-chats list, which is why it belongs on this one. OpenAI doesn't say whether a thread that won't open will be in the file, so check it when it arrives. The path, as OpenAI's export article gave it on 20 September 2026:

Settings → Data controls → Export data → Export → Confirm export.

ChatGPT then sends an email or text message with a download link. Three things OpenAI states about it: exports "can take up to 7 days to arrive"; the download link "expires 24 hours after you receive it"; and you need to download it "while you are signed in to the same account that requested it." The ZIP "includes your chat history and other relevant account data." OpenAI's own advice is to open the ZIP and "check that it contains the conversations you need" — take it seriously, because a forum user reported on 21 April 2026 that their export was missing most of their conversations at a time when their long chats would not load.

Two limits. "An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted." And the settings export is not available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces; OpenAI's instruction there is to contact the workspace owner. If you cannot sign in at all, OpenAI points to its Privacy Portal as the other route to request your data.

Which situation are you in?

Sources, all read on 20 September 2026. The part no checklist fixes: one thread was the only copy

Suppose the chat opens again in an hour — about how long the 19 July incident lasted. What you learned in that hour is still true: three weeks of thinking about a client lived in exactly one place, and you had no say over whether it would open. That is a single point of failure; you would not accept it for a contract or a board deck.

The fix is a habit more than a product. A chat thread is a good place to think and a poor place to be the only record of what was decided. When a thread produces something worth keeping — a decision, a number, a next step — put it somewhere else the same day; a two-line note will do. And keep the source material where it already lives: the client's email in your mailbox, the PDF in your files.

Where Equerry fits

• CC or forward the client thread. CC or forward one thread to your Equerry address and ask about it later. Later replies reach Equerry too, as long as they keep your Equerry address on the thread. The original stays in your own mailbox, so Equerry is never the only copy.
• Keep the decision in ten seconds. Dictate a voice memo on the way out of the call, save a short note, or send a PDF or screenshot from the share sheet.
• Ask later. "What did we agree with Acme on pricing?" is answered from what you sent. When an answer draws on a note you saved, it carries a source chip: tap it to see the passage Equerry used and open the original.
• See what it kept from your notes. What Equerry remembered from a note you saved is listed; delete a note you saved and what came from it goes too.

Two honest limits. Equerry cannot import your ChatGPT conversations or a ChatGPT export, so it is no help with the thread that will not open today. And it is software too: it has limits of its own, it can have an outage like any other service, and it only knows what you sent it. The point is that what matters no longer sits in one place. Keep ChatGPT for thinking out loud, and keep the record somewhere built to keep it.
